What is the IoT Singularity Moment? Will the IoT Become Truly Intelligent?

By Ken Briodagh
February 05, 2020

IoT Evolution Expo 2020 is coming up fast, and we interviewed several of our speakers to get a bit of a preview of what to expect from their sessions.

Here, we spoke to two of our Kickoff Panelists, Steve Brumer, Partner at analyst firm BH IoT Group, and Les Goldman, Sr. Product Manager at Syniverse.

In this future-forecasting panel, Goldman, Brumer and the other panelists will kick off the IoT Evolution Expo 2020: The Thinking IoT Arrives, with a Tuesday session “The IoT Singularity: Will AI & ML Make IoT Self-Aware?,” thinking about and discussion the nature of machine intelligence and, perhaps more important, how AI & ML can be leveraged to create real business outcomes in a mature IoT industry.

To join this session and the entire event, taking place February 11 to 14 in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, click here to register.

Here is a little preview of their thoughts:

IoT Evolution: What are some key ideas you plan to cover in your session?
Steve Brumer: Where & how is ML&AI being used today? What is the true value today? Who are the players?
Les Goldman: Define AI, ML & RPA. Learning process, data produced and network impacts, and designing for security. Legal implications.

IoTE: What insights do you hope attendees will take home?
SB: Where is the money in this space. How can you participate?
LG: A view of the whole ecosystem. Understanding of the key benefits, deployment considerations, risks and current industry status for deployments – simplify the complexities.

IoTE: Can you identify a few important trends influencing your sector of the IoT which will shape the path of the industry?
SB: Getting companies to complete successful PoC’s and trials, and then commit funding to deploying the solutions using IoT. With our industry at somewhere around 5 billion IoT devices, we are not even close to the numbers that are predicted and we need to understand why & what is needed.
LG: IoT will be influenced by key trends such as 5G, Private LTE, global communications services (macro cellular and satellite), non-cellular IoT devices, security (including risks of using the public Internet), industry/government standards and compliance.

IoTE: What are the biggest challenges facing the IoT right now? What are some strategies you recommend to overcome those challenges?
SB: Successful PoCs. Finding the System Integrators who can own the entire IoT project from concept to delivery to support. Education of the industry, vendors, students and customers.
LG: Connectivity, interoperability, security and application access across networks; both local and wide area. Connectivity and interoperability are key for IoT to maximize solution design and cost efficiency. Security is lacking today for IoT services, and the problem is compounded by use of public Internet. Access to public/private cloud applications is critical – data is the gold standard for IoT. IoT network solutions must be flexible to address micro (local) and macro (wide area) communication use cases.

IoTE: Which vertical markets have the most to gain from IoT implementation? Which are leading?
SB: Asset tracking has the best ROI. Utilities. Manufacturing.
LG: Certain commercial verticals have been early adopters of IoT; transportation, logistics, manufacturing and energy. Others are emerging; healthcare, connected cars and agriculture. Some have yet to truly take off; smart cities, autonomous vehicles and finance.
